Steel carport can withstand nature’s fury

The unlikely impact of two carports occurred in South Point, Ohio earlier this spring when a “Godzilla” type storm picked up a carport from a driveway and crashed it into a neighboring carport. Without a doubt, this steel carnage sent the homeowners scurrying for safety as they feared the capabilities of a prevailing wind that had just tossed a carport around like a tin can. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the same cannot be same for a Pennsylvania man who met an unfortunate demise due to a structural failing.
Steel metal is the only true carport protection
Richard Rearick was spending a quiet spring evening under his family’ carport when the building suddenly buckled and collapsed, critically injuring the Indiana County man. Authorities later concluded that the large, disturbing cracking sound that precipitated the crash likely occurred near the area where the roof trusses connected to the house.
While we don’t know for certain that these unfortunate collapses were the result of human error, we can’t help but notice a common thread that sticks out in the structural unravelling of both carports. Both incidents appeared to have involved an issue of proper anchoring. The Ohio carport that turned into a surface-to-air missile appeared to have lacked proper anchoring. We encourage all our customers to consider anchoring their metal carport. They should also contact their local building inspector for permitting information before the begin laying a solid foundation for their new carport.
