How to Prepare Your Car for Winter

Winter is quickly approaching, and Carport.com wants to make sure that your car is prepared for the change in weather. Depending on where you live, winter can be extremely harsh on your car. Allowing it to sit out in the cold harsh weather can impact your car negativity.

Here are some tips in order to better prepare your car for the winter months:

  • Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on your battery and can drain its energy quickly if not taken care of. You can generally have your battery checked for free at many auto parts stores.
  • Flush your antifreeze and cooling system. This should be done about every two years to ensure that you don’t have any problems when winter comes.
  • Check your oil. When the temperature changes outside, it will affect the temperature inside your engine. Make sure to have our old oil replaced with oil that is rated for the temperature of your area.
  • Check your tires. Tire pressure is highly important when driving in the snow. When temperature changes, it may change the pressure in your tires. Read your owners manual and fill your tires to the correct level for an optimum driving experience. If you live in an area that has a large amount of snowfall each year, it may be wise to invest in some snow tires. Snow tires are much better suited for driving in icy conditions and are better than the common “all-weather” tires.
  • Check your wipers and windshield fluid. Visibility especially during the winter months is a must. Precipitation and salt spray from the roads can reduce your visibility greatly. Make sure you have properly working windshield wipers, you have enough windshield wiper fluid, and that your windshield wiper fluid will not freeze in the frozen conditions.
  • Underside corrosion: Especially if you live in an area with large amounts of snowfall, it would be smart to invest in corrosion prevention. Whenever salt is sprayed on the road before each snowfall, the cities will spray salt on the road. This spray can be harmful to the underside of your car. It will eventually eat through the metal and create problems into the future. You can go to many mechanics and they will be able to spray a protective coating on he underside of your car. This should be done yearly.
