Florida just can’t seem to escape insidious threats and pending doom.
From hurricanes and alligators, to stifling heat and bizarre news headlines, the Sunshine State has had its share of peril. Now that list has grown with the addition of a recently discovered super termite that can eat through wood and even a foundation.
These “super bugs” are of the subterranean Asian variety and were first discovered in south Florida, and insect experts agree these ravenous bugs are headed for Tampa Bay. Within a few years, they could easily spread throughout the Deep South. Pest control expert Steve Fuchs said the bugs work in vicious unison and can chew up to a pound of wood in a day. “They can work 24 hours straight,” he said. There are even some reports of the bugs having the capacity to eat through concrete. We are guessing these little guys aren’t picky eaters.

Like ants, whose most egregious offense is annoying picnic guests, termites report to a King or Queen, as the termite kingdom has yet to host free, democratic elections. Like the Iraqi Republican Guard, the colony is also protected by a breed of steel-jawed soldiers, who abide by a creed of fierce royalty and do-or-die moxie.
